Pro-Torah Scholarship and First-Century Meal Customs (Interview w/ Caleb Hegg)
Join me as I sit down with Caleb Hegg from TorahResource to discuss the important work TorahResource is doing to offer solid, pro-Torah scholarship for the Body of Messiah. We also explore the fascinating world of Greco-Roman meal customs and how this historical context can bring new understanding to New Testament passages about communal meals in the early church.

Rabbi Tovia Singer is Wrong About Paul's Position on the Law of Moses
Переглядів 2,6 тис.4 години тому
In a recent video, Rabbi Tovia Singer argues that Paul detested the Law of Moses and taught that Christians don’t need to keep it. However, Rabbi Singer’s objection relies on an outdated, antinomian reading of Paul, which does not accurately reflect the true Paul depicted in the Pauline epistles and Acts. In this video, we address Rabbi Singer’s claims and clarify Paul’s stance on the Law of Mo...
What it Means to Fulfill the Law of Moses (Matthew 5:17) | A Pro-Torah Apologetics Bible Study

What did Jesus teach about the Law of Moses? Did he say that he came to bring it to an end, or did he want his followers to obey it? Matthew 5:17-20 is a key passage that speaks to this question. In this video, we focus on verse 17, where Jesus says, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” We explore what Jesus mea...
"Do Not Resist the Evildoer"? (Matthew 5:38-42)

How should believers respond when someone wrongs us? In Matthew 5:38-42, Yeshua offers a surprising answer to that question. He references the “eye for an eye” principle found in the Torah, and then proceeds to explain how he expects his followers to respond when they are slapped, sued, and mistreated. Last Sabbath, I had the honor of speaking at my local congregation, Founded In Truth Fellowsh...

Do Modern Bible Versions Intentionally Mistranslate 1 Timothy 6:19?

Peter's Warning About the Antinomians Who Twist Paul's Letters (2 Peter 3:15-17)

In 2 Peter 3:15-17, Peter warns that Paul’s letters contain content that is “hard to understand” and which “the ignorant and unstable” misinterpret. He then connects the mishandling of Paul’s letters to “lawless people.” In this video, I argue that 2 Peter 3:15-17 represents Peter’s warning regarding antinomians (individuals who reject God’s law) who misinterpret passages in Paul’s letters to a...

Yes! I love this because I saw the Lord’s Supper as the same thing, “as often as you do this, do it in remembrance of Me”, as often as we gather, we commune with Him, where 2 or 3 are gathered together in My Name I am there in the midst… How often are we communing together to honor our Messiah? Then how often are we actually participating in “communion”? Sounds like should be pretty often lol… forsake not the assembling together of yourselves even more as you see the day approaching! 🙌🏼🙏🏼

You will often see pro-torah people shouting "the lord's supper was passover!!!" but it's like... what exactly did the early church do then when they met? Clearly there was a thanksgiving (eucharist) meal happening when they got together. How did that work? Like a jewish kiddush today? Isn't that like "communion" in the church today? What should church look like today? It's not enough to just say "the lord's supper was passover".

There clearly was a law at some point where god required the sacrifice of firstborns. Ezekiel 20:25-26, Micah 6:6-7, Exodus 13:13-15. What you’re citing are redactions that later looked at the practice as unacceptable. This actually makes a lot of sense if you look at the evidence of Elephantine. I think Ezekiel is written before the Torah is complete or even widely known and he is aware of these pre-Torah laws requiring the sacrifice.

    • @DavidWilberBlog

The problem is that there is not good exegetical support for this reading of Ezekiel 20. It's just a assumed beforehand and imposed onto the text. Friebel's interpretation is far more plausible just by reading the context of the passage. As McClellan says, we should go with the "plain meaning of the text."

Paul said that EVERYBODY was 'subject' to the law in Romans 2:12-14 - have ths law or not. The law is complex and in fact, CANNOT be enforced by the letter without BREAKING it. When you know how and why it is structured as it is, you can even figure out 'hidden' details - like EXACTLY what Jesus wrote on the ground. He wrote 2 verses from the 'law'. Do you know what they are?

It’s obvious Jesus is correcting their understanding of the Law not just in the rabbinic sense but even how they understood the Commandments. Matt.5:21-32. And even Matt.19:8 Jesus even claims supremacy over the alteration Moses makes when he was given the authority to tighten and loosen. In 1 Timothy 1:5-15 it is important to note that Paul upheld the law With tenacity. However he was still regarded as the worst of sinners. The Holy Spirit calls us to a higher accountability in our hearts and minds that the mosaic law lacked the ability to do well but it was still there. To say Jesus was telling us to follow the mosaic law only is to reject the many corrections Jesus and Paul expressed. To say Jesus brought our understanding how to fully follow the law as it was intended originally from our hearts out of love is the correct interpretation. This doesn’t abolish the law but brings it into its full understanding.

      @DavidWilberBlog 16 годин тому

@@ezekielsaltar4728 That is an outdated interpretation of Acts 15. Most scholars do not believe that the concept of "Noahide laws" is being presented by the apostles in Acts 15. Rather, most now recognize that the apostles see the Gentile believers as analogous to the "stranger" in the Hebrew Scriptures, and thus they are required to keep the commands given to the stranger. Tim Hegg has a good paper on this topic, which was presented at ETS some years ago.

David, Singer is not “unaware of recent interpretations Paul’s letters”. He knows about it (Let’s not forget a certain Australian) he relies on the fact that most Christians do not. If he didn’t rely on it, his narrative wouldn’t work. Bottom lie is, he has an agenda and lots of so-called gentiles are fooled by it. He’ll say something like “my brothers and sisters it’s time to leave the church and come back to tanakh, but his use of the phrase “brothers and sisters” is very sneaky and very specific. If you’re a gentile, he doesn’t mean you. He’s only concerned with Jews who believe the lie about the anti-law Paul and just want them to not believe in Yeshua.

Only a true antinomian and hypocrite would hide, delete or whitewash the following scriptures. Exodus 31:14 “Therefore you are to keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it must be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. 15 For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a Sabbath of complete rest [Exodus 20:8-11; Leviticus 23:1-3], holy to the Lord; whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death.“ (NASB) Exodus 35:1 Then Moses assembled all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and said to them, “These are the things that the Lord has commanded you to do: 2 “For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a holy day, a Sabbath of complete rest to the Lord [Exodus 20:8-11; Leviticus 23:1-3]; whoever does any work on it shall be put to death.“ (NASB) Numbers 15:32 Now while the sons of Israel were in the wilderness [Heb. midbar], they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day [Exodus 20:8-11; Leviticus 23:1-3]. 33 And those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation; 34 and they placed him in custody, because it had not been decided what should be done to him. 35 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The man must be put to death [Exodus 31:14-15; Exodus 35:1-2; Deuteronomy 27:26; Matthew 5:18]; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.” 36 So all the congregation [Heb. edah] brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death with stones, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. (NASB) Deuteronomy 4:1 “Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I am teaching you to perform, so that you will live and go in and take possession of the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2 You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, >>>> nor take away from it, <<<< so that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I am commanding you.” (NASB) Matthew 5:18 “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, >>>> not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter shall pass from the Law, <<<< until all is accomplished!“ (NASB) Galatians 3:10 For all who are of works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all the things written in the book of the Law, to do them [Deuteronomy 27:26].” (NASB) Galatians 4:21 Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the Law? Man! David, thank you for this teaching. Orthodox Christian tradition has done so much harm. Just as Rabbinic Judaism has added to the Word of God and added their own traditions and commentaries that often sets aside the Word of God or nullifying it in order to uphold the traditions, so has general Christian traditions and doctrines done the same. Consider the implications of Orthodox Rabbi's looking at Jesus and saying he came to bring his own new religion, and by his teachings and the teachings of his disciples, nullifying the Commands of God. This is based on Christianity misreading the Apostolic writings due to bad doctrine and church traditions borne out of a hatred of the Jews who they say killed Jesus (forgetting it is due to all our sins that He came to redeem us, laying down His own life). So the Orthodox Rabbinic Rabbis say, look what Deut 13 says about someone who does signs and wonders, yet leads them away from serving God...such a one should be killed...and look at what happened to Jesus. Let me leave it there for now, before I write a book about it in the comments, haha.

No. The Torah has not changed, but it now has a different way that it it practiced, just as the Passover is now to be celebrated-see Jeremiah 31:31-34. The traditions of moshe have been updated to the tradition of Yeshua, who himself was Torah-TaNaK , it fulfilled and so fulfilled it in us. Under the traditions of moshe, we closely observed the feast. But now with Yeshua, we celebrate the fulfillment of the Feasts as they were shadows of the salvation through him. Yeshua is Shabbat! He is our rest and in him are we complete. This the meaning and purpose of Celebrating Shabbat, which is our Wholeness that makes is Holy. We were promised long ago that by faith (which equals to Trust and Obedience) we would enter into His rest. That Promise is fulfilled with Yeshua-"Come to me wll you who are heavy laden an I will give you test." (See Matthew 11:28). Yes, the Law remains but no longer according to Moshe Tradition but according to that of Yeshua. As far as Jeremiah 31:34, this is fulfilled by the Holy Spirit, whom Yeshua sent to Teach us all things as Yeshua would tell us before hand. John who recorded that went on to say that you have the Spirit and you know all things. Yes, Torah has Not changed, except only in the way iwe apply it and how it works in our lives. What was once blind outward followed by outward ritual rote, is Now in our hearts as it is to be in every part of us and so, in all we dool.....

There's no way you people can accept the Bible and THINK we still under Moses Law. There's just no way

Actually, many Christians believe we should follow God's laws given through Moses PRECISELY BECAUSE we accept the Bible. In the Bible, Jesus said that he did not come to abolish the Law of Moses and urged his followers to keep the commandments (Matthew 5:17-20). Paul did not disagree with Jesus (2 Timothy 3:15-16).

That's why I'm cautious of teachings by people that have the prefix "Rabbi" on their names.

You basically are saying you're not a Christian. You have condemned yourself

Settle down. I am a Christian because I follow Christ, and "Christian" means follower of Christ. One thing Christ taught is that he didn't come to abolish the Torah and that his followers should keep the commandments (Matthew 5:17-20). Nobody is "condemned" for taking Christ's teachings seriously.

The 10 Commandments are the Laws of the Lord of hosts, the Jealous God. All the other laws of Moses are man's laws, or the Lord of hosts is an idiot. Let me tell you my Law. Do no harm. The punishment for the Harm you do can not exceed a double of the harm done. There is no forgiveness because that would be unfair and unjust. Why should you care about what my Law is because I am Immanuel, Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Notice most can easily pay for their sins without fear of going to Hell because you must be extremely evil to go to Hell.

Don't mean to sound nasty, but I've listened to quite a few rabbi's. Seams that they read the new testament from a defensive stand. They need to look at history and see the reality of their own position as people of a lost religious system. The system seems to be more important than reality. God loves, and we must learn to love as he does. Paul never deviates from that truth. Law cannot save, love demonstrated looks exactly like law keeping.

It's a little funny. tonight I have been having a back and forth with R.L Solberg on this same subject. I told him he needs to debate you again. I told him you bested him in the Sabbath debate. But of course many on Solbergs side would say he won.

Paul was speaking not only to Jews and Gentiles who have nothing to do with the law, but also the God fearers, who like the Jews, knew the law. As far as men who are circumcised, Paul said that they have ab obligation to keep all the law. Christians who are not Jews are not required to keep all of the law of Moses that are appropriate to the individual. Even of the Jews, they do not keep all of the law. For instance, men do not immerse themselves after memes, because they do not mensurate. Thus the law is not appropriate for men. Likewise, there are laws that only pertain to Jews. According to Peter, newborn Christians have a need for Jewish scriptures that they may grow thereby until they are in full communion with Jesus so that they will be informed of exactly what they should do.

There are numerous errors in the thought about Paul's opinion of the law, especially since Paul refers back to the law as a guiding principle of spiritual values. He says things like "like the law says," explaining that the law is put for the transgresor, not for the ones that are in faith. We have much higher standards then the basic precepts of the law. In the law you can't commit adultery. In the new testament you can't even look at a women with lust, and so on.

Well you can see where Singer comes from when you consider Antinominians like Andy Stanley, R. l. Solberg, and Dr. Brown. But Singer does have his agenda.
